Regulators in Abu Dhabi will offer the option for non-Muslim expatriates in family and inheritance matters to move away from the otherwise mandatory application of Shariah law. The National reports that with a new marriage mediation law non-Muslim couples in Abu Dhabi will be able to get married and divorced through churches and religious leaders of their own faith. Exemptions from VAT
Residential property in the UAE, some financial services, undeveloped land and local transport will be exempt from value-added tax (VAT), which will be introduced at a rate of 5 per cent on January 1 next year and is expected to boost GDP by about 1.5 per cent. Whereas supplies (including sales or leases) of commercial properties will be taxable at the standard VAT rate, supplies of residential properties will generally be exempt from VAT.
